Funding for Astex's start-up in 1999 was provided by Abingworth Management and Oxford Biosciences
Advent International, Alta Partners, GIMV and the University of Cambridge joined Abingworth and Oxford Biosciences in a private financing round that completed in December 2001, raising £28.4million.
In October 2003 Astex merged with the Berlin-based cancer biotechnology company metaGen Pharmaceuticals GmbH and completed a second round financing which together increased Astex's cash position by £23 million.
